Sell USD from an account or exchange US dollar cash

Selling US dollars means giving USD to the exchange provider and receiving Canadian dollars. The right process depends on whether your money is in a bank account or held as physical banknotes.

USD in a bank account

CanAm serves clients across Canada electronically. Identify the bank and country where your USD is held, and the CAD account you want to receive the converted funds.

Before sending money, confirm the supported funding route and account requirements. A Canadian USD account and a US-based account may need different instructions.

USD banknotes in hand

Contact our Windsor store at 3854 Dougall Ave, Windsor, ON N9G 1X2 about selling US dollar cash. Tell the team the amount you want to exchange and confirm the visit arrangements.

This can suit leftover travel money or other cash holdings. Electronic service across Canada does not mean physical cash can be exchanged at a CanAm counter in every city.

Our cash versus electronic exchange guide explains the two service routes.

How to sell US dollars with CanAm

1. Request your selling quote

Give us the USD amount, where it is held and your intended CAD destination. Mention any deadline. Register for a free account when arranging an electronic exchange.

2. Confirm the CAD proceeds

Review the quoted rate, total USD required, net CAD amount, quote validity and expected delivery. Keep the written confirmation of your electronic trade.

3. Send USD and receive CAD

Use the funding instructions supplied for your transaction. Check the CAD deposit against the agreed amount. For banknotes, follow the store’s cash exchange arrangements.

See how CanAm works for more about registration, trade confirmation and service requirements.

Compare how many Canadian dollars you receive

When selling USD, compare the net CAD received for the same total USD outlay. Ask providers for quotes close together in time, using the same funding route and delivery destination.

Net CAD = USD converted × quoted CAD per USD − separate CAD charges

A higher CAD-per-USD rate produces more CAD before separate charges. If a charge is taken from your USD budget, deduct it before calculating the conversion.

Example: selling USD 5,000

The figures below are hypothetical, not current CanAm or bank quotes. Each option starts with USD 5,000 available for conversion.

Option CAD per USD Separate CAD charge Net CAD received
A 1.3800 CAD 0 CAD 6,900
B 1.3950 CAD 25 CAD 6,950

Option B delivers CAD 50 more after its separate charge. A “no fee” label on its own does not show which quote produces more CAD: the exchange rate matters too. Ask whether sending, intermediary or receiving-bank charges could change the amount that arrives.

Make your USD selling quote specific to your funds

Whether you receive USD income, hold US-dollar savings or have money left after a trip, start with the USD you can actually deliver and the CAD you need.

  • Salary or freelance income: explain where the USD is deposited and whether you expect recurring conversions.
  • Business receipts: identify the business account and CAD destination so the team can confirm the appropriate setup.
  • US-based funds: confirm the payment route before initiating a transfer; do not assume every USD account uses the same funding method.
  • Cash: contact the Windsor store rather than following bank-transfer instructions for physical banknotes.

If you already hold USD, selling it for CAD is a conversion. Moving money from a US bank to Canada can also involve a cross-border transfer. Tell the team which situation applies so the quote covers the right service.

Selling US dollars: frequently asked questions

Can I sell US dollars in Canada?

Yes. CanAm provides electronic USD exchange for customers across Canada and cash exchange at its Windsor store. Specify whether your US dollars are in an account or held as banknotes when requesting a quote.

What does it mean to sell USD for CAD?

You provide US dollars and receive Canadian dollars at the agreed transaction rate. From your perspective, you are selling USD and buying CAD; you are not buying more US dollars.

Can I sell USD from a Canadian bank account?

Tell CanAm which Canadian bank holds your USD and where you want the CAD deposited. The team will confirm the supported funding method and account requirements before you send funds.

Can I sell leftover US dollar cash?

Contact the Windsor store about exchanging your banknotes for CAD. Confirm the amount, accepted notes and visit arrangements. The electronic exchange process is separate from an in-store cash exchange.

Which USD selling rate should I compare?

Is there a minimum amount to sell?

CanAm’s How It Works page lists an $800 transaction minimum with flexibility and no minimum for in-store transactions. Confirm the currency denomination and applicable requirements for your USD sale.

Can I sell US dollars for my business?

CanAm offers business currency exchange. Provide your USD amount, business account details and payment deadline so the team can confirm the appropriate account setup and instructions.

What if I need to buy US dollars instead?

If you have CAD and want USD, use our buy US dollars service. That transaction has the opposite funding and delivery direction.
