How to Convert USD to CAD

To convert USD to CAD, compare how many Canadian dollars will reach your account after the exchange rate and any fees are applied. Then choose a provider, confirm the rate and delivery date, and fund the exchange using its instructions.

Whether you are converting a US paycheque, business revenue or savings, this guide explains the calculation, the difference between cash and bank-account transfers, and how to arrange a USD-to-CAD exchange with CanAm.

How to calculate your USD-to-CAD exchange

If your quote is expressed as Canadian dollars per US dollar, multiply the USD amount by that rate. Subtract any fees charged in CAD to find the net amount you receive.

Illustrative example, not a current quote: US$5,000 × 1.38 CAD per USD = C$6,900 before fees. At 1.36 CAD per USD, the same US$5,000 produces C$6,800. With equal fees, the first quote delivers C$100 more.

Ask each provider for the final CAD amount for the same USD amount, funding method and delivery date. Include sending-bank, intermediary and receiving-bank charges where applicable. A “no fee” offer can still include a margin in the exchange rate.

For the reverse direction, divide CAD by a rate quoted in CAD per USD: C$6,900 ÷ 1.38 = US$5,000 before fees. The provider’s actual buy and sell quotes may differ; do not assume the reverse quote is the exact reciprocal.

Different Methods of Converting USD to CAD

Bank-account transfers

A bank or an online currency exchange specialist can convert USD held in an account and deliver CAD to your Canadian bank account. Compare executable quotes rather than a currency calculator alone, and confirm which source accounts and funding methods the provider accepts.

Cash exchange

If you have US banknotes or need Canadian cash, compare cash quotes at a bank branch or an in-person exchange office. Cash rates may differ from electronic-transfer rates. Check identification requirements, currency availability and opening hours before travelling.

Cards and ATMs

Cards and ATMs can help with spending or withdrawing money, but they are not the same service as converting a USD account balance into CAD. Check your card’s currency-conversion fee, cash-advance rules and any ATM charges before using them.

What to check before exchanging US dollars

  • Confirm the quote direction. Ask whether the rate is CAD per USD or USD per CAD.
  • Compare net CAD received. Include the rate margin and applicable transfer fees.
  • Check timing. Allow for funding clearance, bank cut-off times, weekends and holidays.
  • Confirm account requirements. A USD account at a Canadian bank and a US-based bank account may use different transfer routes.
  • Avoid unnecessary double conversion. If you already hold USD, ask how to send it as USD rather than having your bank convert it before it reaches the provider.

Is a currency calculator the rate I will receive?

Not necessarily. A calculator may show an indicative market rate. Your executable quote depends on the provider, amount, funding method and any applicable charges.

Can I exchange USD without visiting Windsor?

CanAm supports electronic exchange across Canada. Confirm account eligibility and funding instructions before booking; physical banknotes require an in-person cash service.

Should I wait for a better USD-to-CAD rate?

No one can reliably identify the best future rate. If you have a bill or payment deadline, prioritize sufficient processing time and a quote that meets your budget.
