About New Zealand Dollar

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) has a rich history, beginning in 1840 with the introduction of the New Zealand Pound, which replaced British and Australian coins in circulation. In 1967, New Zealand decimalized its currency, replacing the Pound with the Dollar after public debate over names like “kiwi” and “zeal.” Initially pegged to the US Dollar at 1.62 USD to 1 NZD, the NZD transitioned to a freely floating currency in 1985. In 1999, polymer banknotes were introduced for modernization and security, and in 2006, coins under five cents were removed, with cash transactions now rounded to the nearest ten cents.
