About Mexican Peso

The Mexican Peso is one of the oldest currencies in North America, with its origins tracing back to the Spanish silver dollar, also known as the “piece of eight.” After gaining independence, Mexico continued to use the Peso as its official currency. Interestingly, the Peso was once legal tender in the United States (until 1857) and Canada (until 1854) and even inspired the design of the US Dollar, which was initially pegged at par with the Peso.

In 1993, after years of inflation and devaluation, the Bank of Mexico introduced the Nuevo Peso (New Peso) as part of a monetary reform. The exchange rate was set at 1,000 old Pesos to 1 Nuevo Peso. By 1996, the term “Nuevo” was dropped, and the currency reverted to being called the Mexican Peso (MXN). Today, the Peso remains a stable and widely recognized currency, reflecting Mexico’s growing economic influence.
