About Hong Kong Dollar

The Hong Kong Dollar has a rich and evolving history. During the 19th century, Hong Kong used a variety of foreign currencies, including Indian Rupees, Spanish Dollars, Mexican Pesos, and Chinese coins. In 1825, as a British colony, Hong Kong attempted to standardize its currency by introducing Sterling coins, but this effort was largely unsuccessful. The first official Hong Kong Dollar coins were minted in 1863 by the Royal Mint in London. Over time, the currency has been pegged to different standards, including the British Pound and, more recently, the US Dollar. The current peg to the US Dollar, established in 1983, remains in place today, ensuring the HKD’s stability and global credibility.
