The AUD was introduced on February 14, 1966, replacing the Australian pound. This transition to a decimal currency was aimed at simplifying financial transactions and aligning more closely with the US dollar rather than the British pound. Historically, the AUD was pegged to the British pound, but now it operates on a floating exchange rate system, allowing it to adjust more freely to international economic conditions.
